Abstract

Recently, the safety of vehicles has become more and more important. Especially, that of the heavy-duty vehicles has been quite important on not only vehicles but also people as well, because of their large influence on a society. Therefore it is very important to improve the safety of heavy-duty vehicles. In order to improve the vehicle stability at accidental steering condition and cornering, Roll Stability Assist system has been developed and fitted to the new heavy duty tractor (4×2) as standard. If the vehicle comes to an unstable condition because of steering quickly to avoid the obstructions or driving through a curve in the road too fast, firstly this system warns the driver of the vehicle instability by the warning lamp and alarm to reduce the vehicle’s speed. In the case of persisting instability, engine power is reduced, and finally the trailer’s brake is controlled automatically. Then the vehicle is led to a stable condition. This paper describes the Roll Stability Assist system’s development and its effect.
