Abstract

This study deals with a diesel type compression ignition and spray combustion alcohol (Ethanol) engine. Through the series of our theoretical and experimental studies, which have been already reported, hot EGR is recognized as one of the effective methods for the improvements of ignition and combustion. However, for further improvement of engine performance, it is necessary to obtain combustion with higher degree of constant volume. As the next step of this research we focused on the combined effects of fuel injection timing and hot EGR ratio on total engine performance including ignition, combustion and thermal efficiency in a DI alcohol (Ethanol) engine. Experiments were carried out in the two cases of fuel injection timing within the range of 1000rpm to 1600rpm in engine operating speed with changing of hot EGR ratio. Results indicated that in order to realize a high performance alcohol diesel, careful controls of injection timing and hot EGR ratio are required, and these two control- factors have to be synchronized with engine operating speed.
