Abstract

The data monitoring function, one of the features of OBD II, allows anyone to easily access vehicle performance data through the vehicle’s diagnostic connector. In this study, by applying data monitor function to improve fuel economy, we developed personal a fuel economy measurement system with real-time response and high degree of precision. This system is also valuable in that it can be constructed without vehicle modification with low cost. Then we prototyped a “personal fuel economy meter”, and performed performance evaluation experiments. We obtained favorable results where the fuel economy error was 1.4% with a data sample time approximately 1.0 second for the 10- 15 modes fuel economy test (JIS D 1012 Standard). Also, the fuel economy error was less than 1.5% with even random driving patterns. Finally, a large improvement in performance was confirmed compared to aftermarket simple fuel economy meters.
