Abstract

One way to design a better engine with higher volume efficiency is to build a continuous variable intake valve and exhaust valve. These valves can adjust duration of opening and closing valve lift for appropriate full range of load. This article will present the test of a new designed variable valve train called continuous variable rocker arm (VRA) for single overhead camshaft. Its qualifications are:

1. Ability to increase and decrease duration of opening and closing valve continuously

2. Ability to increase and decrease variable valve lift continuously

3. Ability to adjust opening and closing duration is possible with variable timing control (VTC)

4. Ability to be applied to any valve train, such as DOHC, SOHC, and Push-rod

5. This technique is simple with less compact components

A Single cylinder, 97 c.c., two valves per cylinder

Honda Dream was used for this test. Horsepower, torque, specific consumption, and emission will measure at full range of load.
