Abstract

A six-member mechanism has been proposed in the present paper to achieve five precision points of an automotive steering mechanism. The inner wheel can be rotated upto 61 degrees with fair accuracy. This result has been compared with those achieved by Ackermann steering mechanism (ASM) and Fahey-Eight-Member-Mechanism (FEMM). The divergent end behaviour of ASM has been overcome by the proposed mechanism. The FEMM gives high accuracy but the ASM is less accurate. The proposed mechanism gives fairly accurate result that falls between the above two mechanisms. This steering mechanism increases the space for installing the powertrains. A similar mechanism with different orientation has been suggested for future work.
