Abstract
Road and traffic engineering measures are estimated to have contributed over one-third of the improvement in road trauma over recent years. This presentation will place road safety engineering in the broad context of road safety. It will discuss opportunities for road safety engineering at three levels, hazardous locations (or blackspots), proactive programs aimed at accident prevention, and safety conscious planning of new road networks, including the application of road safety audits.
