Abstract

This study evaluates and develops a MADYMO CRABI-6 dummy model for the purpose of injury prediction in side-impact simulations. An existing dummy model has proven to be insufficient for lateral impacts. Characterisation of the neck segment of the CRABI-6 dummy model involved the analysis of experimental data, gathered during testing at the Road Traffic Authority of New South Wales’ crash testing facility. The sled-test arrangement measured shear forces and moments in both the upper and lower load cells of the dummy neck during lateral flexion, with angles calculated from motion analysis of synchronised high-speed film. Moment and angle data was used to develop neck restraint specifications for a mathematical neck model, which can be incorporated into the full dummy model to accurately predict the response of the neck of a CRABI-6 dummy during physical testing.
