Abstract
Nanoparticle formation in the atmosphere from diesel and natural gas engine exhaust gases has been a recent concern due to adverse effects on human health. Researchers have also found high nanoparticle number concentration on and near urban roadways. The objective of this study is to investigate the formation of nanoparticles near the exhausts of two large generator sets, one powered with diesel and other with natural gas. A Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer was used to measure nanoparticle number concentration. A remote weather station was used to monitor airflow and direction as well as humidity, pressure, and temperature. The nanoparticle formation as a function of distance from the exhaust outlet, temperature, and relative humidity during idling, medium and maximum engine loads was characterized.
