Abstract

Due to the emissions from compression ignition engine (CIE) which are being placed under stricter regulations and the raise of oil price, many countries have been looking for alternative energy. Biodiesel gains recognition as a renewable fuel, which may be used as an alternative fuel to diesel fuel without any modification to the engine. Biodiesel fuels can be produced from vegetable oils or animal fats and have several advantages: they are renewable, safer, biodegradable, and they have a small or even no sulfur content and can reduce the engine exhaust gas emission. Physic nut oil has some advantages such as: it is wide spread in the tropics and the subtropics, it is non edible and therefore does not come in competition with food used. This research was carried out at the Bandung Institute of Technology. The purposes of this research were to compare the engine performances, exhaust gas emissions, and the influences of the fuel on components of a direct injection diesel engine when it was used with biodiesel of physic nut oil, the blend of its with diesel fuel and diesel fuel. The use of biodiesel from physic nut oil is found that lower emission of Unburned Hydrocarbon, Carbon Monoxide, Nitrogen Oxide, Smoke and Brake Specific Fuel Consumption. Besides, the research found the deposit in combustion chamber is lower when it was run with biodiesel and its blend with diesel fuel.
