Abstract

A one dimensional model has been developed to study the penetration length of fuel droplets and other spray parameters in the internal combustion engine versus axial distance. This model accounts for the droplet vaporization and gas aerodynamic force exerted on fuel droplets. The influents of initial conditions such as droplet size, injection velocity on the droplet penetration length are examined. The results show that the penetration of droplet is limited directly by the droplet evaporation rate (i.e the lifetime of the droplet), which is determined by the initial droplet diameter formed through the atomization. The injection velocity of the fuel is an important factor. With the increase of injection velocity, the initial moment of droplet is higher, and it can penetrate longer. The mixing between the fuel spray and the air is improved too.
