Abstract

The combination of lubrication and cooling is an important part in the working of internal combustion engines in order to reduce the effects of friction, wear and heat which have considerable influence on the efficiency and operating life. In conventional methods, the circulating oil takes heat out of the critical sectors to the periphery of the engine where it can be dissipated. Often this method of oil cooling is insufficient for engines developing high power. Engines of higher power output therefore need the best possible heat exchanger for dissipation of heat. Conventional shell and tube type oil cooler occupies large space for the given duty. The present paper presents a detailed design model of an oil cooler of compact type for analyzing and optimizing the performance of the oil cooler. Different heat transfer matrices are tried and studies are carried out simulating various operating parameters to get best operating conditions. Predicted results are compared with available experimental results to validate the developed design model. He code is developed using ‘C’ programming.
