Abstract
Rapid screening protocols are desirable in the development of catalytic aftertreatment devices for internal combustion engines to allow the rapid screening and verification of catalyst formulations and system design. The authors have developed a series of rapid testing protocols which have been applied to diesel oxidation catalysts, lean NOx traps for diesel and gasoline engines, and soot filters for diesel engines. These test protocols include engine and bench reactor techniques, extensive microstructure materials characterization, and correlation to long term aged units returned from field use. These accelerated aging protocols include both the effects of aging and poisoning.
