Abstract

As the starting and the stopping occur high-frequently in the urban transportation, the energy efficiency of the series hybrid system can be further increased by the electric energy recovered through regenerative braking. Then, the series hybrid system is much effective for the city traffic conditions.

The universities and the specialized manufactures which belong to the Research Meeting of Next Generation City Bus of Super Low Pollution (NCB21) in collaboration with government, industry and academic have developed the drive line which is the most suitable for the series hybrid system used wheel in motors.

This drivetrain can apply easily to the interurban hybrid-bus, the fuel cell bus, the trolley bus and the dual-mode trolley bus, which uses properly the electric power and other power supplies, on the assumption that the drivetrain assumes to adopt battery, fuel cell, diesel generator device, respectively.

The authors evaluated the performance and the characteristics of the hybrid system in this paper.

The conclusions are described as follows;

(1) In case of the series hybrid system with the diesel engine generation device, the total stroke volume of the engine has been able to reduce to 1/2-1/3 in volume by planning to make the system most suitable. Therefore, it is possible to use much more effectively the unused space of the bus and also to reduce the noise and the exhaust gas by decreasing the displacement.

(2) If such public transportation as the city hybrid-bus, the trolley bus, LRT and others adopt the suitable series hybrid system, the width of the passage on the axle shaft has been kept wide. As the movement of the wheelchair becomes easy, those public transportation contribute to the barrier-free.

(3) The driving characteristics of the hybrid bus become ideal on acceleration, deceleration and others by the activecontrolling system. Then, the service to the standing passengers, the aged and the physically handicapped improves remarkably.
