Abstract

The ongoing trend of reducing development time and engine downsizing has put high demands on the simulation process in engine design and development. Areas such as fluid dynamics, heat transfer and stress-strain analysis typically looked at separately, now have to be considered simultaneously.

Load cycle testing for validation still takes a significant amount of the development time. In order to shorten these cycle tests, a thorough understanding of the materials' behavior under complex loading conditions such as thermal shock loading is necessary. A novel approach of using simulation tools with supportive material testing in order to analyze the complex deformation and damage process under a typical load cycle is presented and further approaches to shorten test cycles are discussed.
