A Quantitative Study of Exhaust Gas Oxygen Sensor Signal Variations in SI Engine

Abstract

This article examines test results of an engine exhaust gas oxygen sensor output signals obtained from a 1991 3.8L, Buick V-6 engine, fitted with individual oxygen sensor per cylinder. A LabView data acquisition equipment is used to record individual cylinder’s exhaust gas oxygen output signal and also the main (stock) exhaust gas oxygen sensor (EGOS) signal. A statistical treatment of the variability of the mean of the six cylinders’ EGOS signal is compared with stock EGOS signal. The conditions that provide stable systematic error are established. The magnitude of error is evaluated. The variations of the mean values of the left and right banks of cylinders are compared. In conclusion, some variations in air-fuel mixture of the cylinders with this configuration of the exhaust manifold have been found. Tables and graphs illustrate the statistic results.
