Abstract
This paper will review the status of efforts to control motor vehicle pollution around the world including the US, Europe, Japan and many developing countries. Then it will highlight several remaining challenges that will be the driving forces for future efforts including continued high growth in the vehicle population, toxic emissions, ultrafine particles, fuel quality and global warming. It will conclude with a statement of principles that should serve as a guide for policymakers in developing future vehicle pollution control policies.
