Abstract
Gasoline and diesel fuels can today be considered as high tech products although most vehicle owners do not appreciate this. This high tech is due to the complex nature of modern fuels which must fulfil a long list of technical requirements.
Some of these are legislated in order to reduce emissions, i.e. sulphur content, or for safety reasons such as flash point while others are to prolong engine life, decrease fuel consumption etc. The base set requirements are given in fuel standards such as EN228 for gasoline and EN590 for diesel fuel in Europe.
Automotive companies are actively promoting high quality fuels in order to reduce emissions and fuel consumption. It is also important that engine, exhaust aftertreatment and on-board-diagnostics owners.
