Abstract

The on-vehicle application of electronic parking assistance systems is quickly growing, due to both an increasing comfort demand and a reduced rear visibility - mostly as a consequence of style issues.

Though parking assistance systems ensure a comfort function, they must guarantee high safety performances in order to avoid false or missing alarms that could lead to accidents. Besides, performances are strongly dependent on sensor installation and system tuning. For these reasons, a methodology to accurately evaluate the performances of such systems has been developed and implemented.

This paper presents the evaluation methodology, which is based on a custom designed test bench, making use of a computer controlled moving platform – on which various types of obstacle can be placed – and of a data acquisition device.

The discussed methodology supports many phases of the vehicle development, ranging from specification definition and component evaluation to functional validation and process monitoring.
