Abstract

The noise aspect of drivelines is becoming an increasingly important factor in the development of modern motor vehicles. Automotive transmissions contribute a considerable proportion of overall vehicle noise. The intrusive characteristic of rattling and clattering noises makes it a particularly important factor. A strategic approach to investigating these types of noise in the form of experimental investigations of automotive transmissions on a rattle and clatter test stand at the Institute of Machine Components at the University of Stuttgart, and theoretical studies of the parameters responsible, are leading to findings that are helping to reduce this type of noise.
