ABSTRACT –
Electrified powertrain systems are rapidly gaining in importance throughout the world. The main reasons for this trend are the potentials for CO2 reduction, the requirement for higher electrical performance from the vehicle power net point of view, the stricter future emissions legislation and last but not least improving the driving performance. In order to achieve this demands an additional range of functions is necessary. This enhancement should ideally be integrated into already in powertrain existing control units.

The technique of embedding additional functionality into third party control units defined as “software sharing” has become state-of-the-art in AVL. In an easy fashion the standard functionality can be replaced by proprietary control functions. Over the course of numerous e-mobility activities, AVL created a strictly modular, component-based function library for every powertrain control unit. This includes conventional units (e.g. engine management system, transmission control unit) and specific electrified systems (belt starter generators, etc.). The software components are fully anchored in a total software architecture derived from the corresponding project-specific requirements. Both the steady state data interfaces and the dynamic architecture (scheduling) are precisely defined. So, the efficient integration of the software system in the target control unit can be achieved.

The integration of additional software components for electrified powertrain systems into existing third party control units will be shown as example on a 48V system architecture. AVL utilizes a generic developed function library that permits the targeted fulfilment of even specific customer demands.
