ABSTRACT
Control Strategy in modern car engines is extensively based on use of engine maps or matrix based lookup tables that have been derived through comprehensive engine test bench experimental data. The work in this paper is concerned with the design of a GDI control strategy and its performance evaluation in HIL platform. The control strategy encompasses the combustion modes of homogeneous, stratified and transition wherein the parameters such as air-fuel ratio, fuel injection duration and ignition phasing are varied to achieve the desired performance (fuel efficiency, torque stability during switching, etc.) in the respective modes. The control strategy design is based on physical understanding of relevant engine components as well as data maps which characterize the control behaviour. The control logic so developed in MATLAB SIMULINK is tested and calibrated in Model in Loop (MIL) and Hardware in Loop (HIL) setup which is described in respective sections of the paper. The results obtained in MIL are compared with a corresponding MPFI engine with similar configuration parameters and the incremental benefit obtained is analysed. Finally, the control logic is run in real time under different operating conditions in a rapid prototype ECU along with the engine plant model running in HIL system and the results are presented to evaluate the performance.
