ABSTRACT – The 3-level monitoring concept is used for Drive-by-Wire systems since its introduction in the ‘90s. Its safety-requirements of applied E/E-components, controllers and their connection and interaction in between are current state of the art, also for other automotive applications. With increased complexity and electrification of automobiles, common microcontroller-structures have reached a certain threshold concerning performance and safety. The current version of the E-Gas monitoring concept mentions the application of multi-core processors and integrated hardware safety-mechanisms. This paper analysis possible configurations of modern multi-core architectures in automotive applications and discusses the question, if safety-certified microcontroller are able to replace the well-established 3-level monitoring concept.
