ABSTRACT – The use of multicore processors in automotive designs offers a unique opportunity to raise the level of feature innovation, and at the same time reduce costs through hardware consolidation. Target design areas include ADAS, Driver Information, vehicle network gateways and Infotainment systems. To achieve these innovation goals, the automotive industry is facing new challenges - having features with different safety requirements in the same ECU is very different from having each feature isolated in a dedicated ECU. The cost saving due to hardware consolidation could easily be erased by the cost of insuring the “freedom of interference” between different features, if poor software architecture decisions are made. This paper looks at some of the domain requirements, particularly with reference to Infotainment, and discusses how the hardware consolidation is happening, and the available choices of software architecture for designers, and the solutions that can help engineers to cope with these new challenges.
