ABSTRACT
In this paper, rollover severity comparison has been described with the difference of rollover stability requirement for each country. Each requirement can be expressed in representative physical vehicle test cases. For physical vehicle test, Fishhook test and VDA test (Verband Der Automobilindustrie - The German Association of the Automotive Industry) and ADAC test (Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club) have been executed with a B segment (small) SUV vehicle. Also the different load condition effect on small SUV rollover characteristics has been described by rollover threshold and rollover index. The vehicle load condition can be changed according to what customer’s needs. This will bring to change to rollover characteristics. A rollover threshold which indicates an impending rollover has been developed by a roll dynamics with phase plane analysis. The rollover index is calculated using the roll angle, the roll rate, the lateral acceleration and time to wheel lift. The test results have been transferred from time domain to roll dynamics phase plane for analysis. Then severity has been compared with rollover threshold. Therefore the rollover severity comparison of stability has been explained by the relationship between rollover test maneuvers and rollover characteristic through rollover threshold on phase plane.
