ABSTRACT - Automated mechanical transmissions (AMTs) and dual clutch transmissions (DCTs) have been widely studied by lots of companies and research centers due to high mechanical efficiency. In order to decrease shift time and improve shift quality, a novel direct-drive gearshift mechanism for AMTs and DCTs is introduced in this paper, which uses a moving coil linear motor as gear change actuator. Specific structure of this gearshift mechanism and the advantages compared to conventional ones are presented. The model of the moving coil linear actuator is described, its static characteristics are validated by FEM and lab test. Through the analysis of gearshift process, it is concluded that accurate position and force control of the actuator is needed. Then, the novel gearshift control system and test bench including this gearshift mechanism was developed. Testing results show that the new designed gearshift control system is effective and this kind of gearshift mechanism is competitive.
