ABSTRACT –

This publication presents the characterization of cavitation potential in torque converters based on acoustic measurements. Experimental testing of a matrix of torque converters was completed using dynamometers in a specially designed test fixture to measure noise due to cavitation. Test results were used to develop models to predict sound power levels generated from cavitation as a function of select design parameters and operating conditions of the automotive torque converter. The model provides insight to improve designs of compact torus torque converters with respect to the level of cavitation noise.
