ABSTRACT –

A number of tire cavity noise-reducing devices have been commercialized, but the use of these devices has been limited to a few high-end vehicles, and adoption has not yet become widespread. The goal of this development was to further enhance the noise reduction efficiency of an on-wheel resonator, which is a wheel add-on device, in order to reduce weight and cost and promote widespread adoption. To achieve this, first a noise reduction principle was established that optimizes the required number and placement of resonators within the tire sound field that undergoes a rolling movement, and then a lightweight, space-saving resonator shape was realized based on that principle. As a result, a new resonator, which enables constantly stable noise reduction of a tire sound field that is undergoing a rolling movement , that achieves a 50% or greater reduction in weight and cost compared to the previous model and a 7.5 dB reduction in peak tire cavity noise was developed and successfully applied to mass production vehicles.
