ABSTRACT -

The growing expectation of improved fuel economy and pollution reduction pushes forward to the evolution of traction sources and powertrain solutions. In particular, electric powertrains are not only locally emissions-free, but also provide new freedoms in driveline design. The selection of driveline architecture and its integration with the platform has an impact on consumption, components, packaging, drivability, durability and also NVH that has to be considered together during the development process. Special care has to be paid to NVH phenomena to satisfy the quietness expectations of the potential users and to provide an adequate feedback to the driver. The new sources of excitation of permanent magnet AC (PMAC) motors have to be taken into account, namely high motor orders, cogging torque and the influence of the control strategy.

This works focuses on these new sources of excitation with the aim of providing guidelines for the driveline design of new electric concepts. For this purpose, the NVH of two prototype electric vehicles with different drivelines adapted from ICE platform are compared at design level and through tests in a hemi-anechoic chamber. The first one is an AWD e-pick-up with axial PMAC motors-to-wheel connected through the drive shafts. The second one is a RWD light-duty truck with a radial PMAC motor in longitudinal configuration with a propeller-shaft. The paper shows the importance of the motor architecture and its synergy with the driveline architecture to induce NVH phenomena and the most critical excitation sources for each electric driveline that should be considered at design phase.
