ABSTRACT - GM has developed new mini vehicle considering high fuel efficiency and low emission. 3 cylinder engine for downsizing and CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) which has better fuel economy than AT (Auto Transmission) were applied on the new vehicle. In case of MT (Manual Transmission), the gear ratio was changed for fuel economy. But, it is necessary to consider the noise and vibration issues in advance, because noise and vibration in 3cylinder engine has some disadvantages compared with the 4cylinder engine. Therefore GM has developed the new vehicle by lesson learn and benchmarking. The purpose of this paper is to introduce the improvement about powertrain noise and vibration of the brand-new vehicle during the development. Especially, abnormal noises such as, engine accessory drive belt noise, engine ticking, CVT belt, oil pump, MT rattle and gear whine, would be expected to be issued. To reduce the noise sources, design optimization was studied besides the noise path blocking.
