ABSTRACT - Butt joining of two tubes is a newly developed technique which is based on the principle of plastic instability due to compression. Experiments and numerical simulation on tube-tube butt joining with different geometrical parameters were performed in this paper. Attention is paid on the influence of the slenderness ratio and the aspect ratio of the tubes on the joining mode of the joint. The critical load that makes a successful tube joint by compression was analysed. The results showed that a successful butt joint can be formed when the slenderness ratio is between 1.25 and 2.81, and the aspect ratio is between 0.91 and 1.2. For the tubes made from St16 steel, the maximum load to obtain a successful tube-tube joint is smaller than 100kN
