Abstract
Research and/or Engineering Questions/Objective
The engineering advancement in front lighting solution to realize innovative styling intension and better illuminating performance in night driving has been achieved recently by introducing LEDs technology and still in progress. However, LED solution for front lighting, especially low and high beam function, has been more dedicated for higher trim level vehicle only because of expensive system cost including LED Driver module, LED light source with cooling and complicated optical system so far. New Renault Samaung’s approach to modular design for LED front lighting concept to replace bulb solution with LED, especially standardized LED driving module and LED light source unite makes it different and raise cost competitiveness of Renault Samsung in the automotive lighting business and it will be extended up to all the ranges of vehicle even low price vehicle which uses only traditional bulb solution in near future. How to optimize the system cost will be explained in this paper.
Methodology
The target performance acceptable for night driving will be evaluated on driving simulator under several different light flux output conditions and optical systems so as to optimize the required performance and efficiency target of each system including optic and thermal management will be investigated considering cost effectiveness.
Results
The development process oriented to cost efficient LED headlamp and low power consumption replacing halogen bulb technology will be suggested in this paper and it will be discussed how much the system price of LED headlamp versus traditional halogen bulb can be reached in keeping with required performance.
Limitations of this study
Rapid change of LED light source efficiency (lumen/watt) can lead more prospective result, however currently existing LEDs or announced by LED makers will be considered to estimate system efficiency and cost.
What does the paper offer that is new in the field including in comparison to other work by the authors?
This study proposes more realistic way of cost efficient LED headlamp application under limited system price and how traditional halogen bulb technology can be phased out.
Conclusions
One of the key features in next generation of head lamp is to standardize all the electronic components like LED driving module (LDM) and LED light source unite to optimize system cost, which allows of us to realize low cost LED headlamp to replace halogen bulb solution in the end. Renault Samsung way of development approach to cost efficient LED headlamp will be presented in FISITA 2016.
