Abstract

Research and/or Engineering Questions/Objective

In order to improve the structural stiffness and achieve the lightweight requirement, a multi-objective optimization was conducted for the vehicle door.

Methodology

The simulation model of sink stiffness and window frame stiffness condition was established first , then select the panels with greater influence on the stiffness as variables, design of experiment was performed using the optimal Latin Hypercube sampling technique.Based on response surface model technique, the approximation models of vehicle door mass, sinking stiffness and window frame stiffness was fitting separately, and then the (elitist Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm, NSGA)NSGA-II for multi-objective optimization was used to get a Pareto optimal solution set, which was verified by finite element anaylsis.

Results

Getting the Pareto optimal solution sets from multi-objective optimization algorithm, and selecting a set of optimal solutions to do the finite element validation, the error between simulation results and optimization results is within 5%.At the same time, compare the results with the initial model, and the mass of vehicle door has reduced 7.35%, sinking stiffness and window frame stiffness also have promotion about 12.1% and 6.1% respectively.

Limitations of this study

Firstly,in this paper, the initial door model test has been carried out to verify the simulation results, however, No test has been carried out to verify the optimization results.Secondly, this paper only consider three performance of the door, the mass, sinking stiffness, window frame stiffness, the other performance are not been taken into consideration.

What does the paper offer that is new in the field including in comparison to other work by the authors?

The research of this paper can effectively guide the engineering design about vehicle door.

Conclusions

In this paper, considering the mass of the door, sinking stiffness, window frame stiffness properties for multi-objective optimization, getting the pareto optimal solution set of the door mass and sinking stiffness.Do the validation of the optimal solution and compare with the initial model, the door has a reduction on mass,at the same time, sinking stiffness and window frame stiffness has a promotion respectively. The results indicate that multi-objective optimization method can effectively guide the engineering design about the development and optimization of vehicle door.
