Abstract

Research and/or Engineering Questions/Objective

According to FSAE rules, only a car equipped with an engine not more than 610cm3 of displacement can take part in the contest and the engine also must be modified within a 20mm diameter restrictor. The restrictor limits the operation of the engine and damages the torque features and fuel economy. Thus the intake system must be changed to improve intake process.

Methodology

According to the FSAE competition of last year,.adequate engine operation data has been acquired.Earlier analysis of these data has resulted in a engine speed histogram. Histogram showed which engine speed range was used most frequent and that will be target speed range. In this study GT-power was used to simulate the operation of engine. After building up the engine model, different intake scheme(such as different intake pipe length and resonance chamber volume) was computed and the results have been compared. Then select a optimal scheme which can provide the largest volumetric efficiency at the target speed range. Finally, the simulate result will be verified by engine bench test.

Results

In the paper simulation results of intake system will be presented. And the impact of different intake parameters of intake system will be analyzed.Through simulation analysis in different intake system scheme,an optimal intake scheme was selected (intake pipe length is 700mm,resonance chamber volume is 4.5L and intake manifold length is 150mm). Finally, the volumetric efficiency in the target speed range was beyond 0.8,under the limits of restrictor.

Limitations of this study

The most important limitation of this study is FSAE rule limitation and vehicle layout space limitation. Because the intake system must be mounted on FSAE racing car,and available space of FSAE racing car is not sufficient. This point must be considered when decide scheme.

What does the paper offer that is new in the field in comparison to other works of the author

The FSAE racing car intake system design is different with passenger car. In this paper only consider how to improve engine performance within the limitation of rules .

Conclusions

This paper tempts come up with a design methodology of FSAE racing car intake system. This methodology will help to design and manufacture a FSAE racing car
