Abstract

Research and/or Engineering Questions/Objective

Considering passive and active safety features, active safety features demands more spadework as it prevent the risk of a crash. While driving, better driver state and driver wellness avoid crash. In view of driver wellness one important factor of the driver which take into account is color blindness. During the driving license qualifying process this is being checked but various studies prove that this color blindness can occur at any point of time and the person may not realize it quickly. So in this study its proving one way to detect color blindness problem of the driver from his reactions to drive environment which prompts to run a Ishihara model test and once the system confirms, based on the color vision deficiency, all Human Machine Interfaces(HMI) get adapted which assist driver to overcome this problem.

Methodology

CarMaker is a simulation program that reproduce virtual traffic situations. From this real time driver reaction to the driving environment is captured. The developed algorithm monitor the driver reaction and detect the probability of color blindness. Then the optimized Ishihara model test is prompted. Ishihara model is optimized to have minimal steps to reach result which is automotive compliance. Finally, once the color blindness is confirmed, based on the classification of color vision deficiency the developed logic will drive all human machine interfaces to aid the driver.

Results

In this paper the successful results will be presented based on the test done using CarMaker test platform. The extent of validation will be increased as more test data becomes available. The achieved performances and accuracies proves that the optimized Ishihara model can be used in automotive domain and the Human Machine interfaces can be adapted accordingly.

Limitations of this study

All the fundamental scale driver conditions are considered for verification which is enough for proving this concept. Future work is to realizing this into a vehicle and before that is vital to investigate all the probable complex drive situations. It is obligatory to carry out an actual vehicle tests in actual road environments.

What does the paper offer that is new in the field including in comparison to other work by the authors?

Physical sensors are used to measure most existing physiological signals, which can be invasive and uncomfortable for drivers. This study provides a noninvasive approach of real time diagnostics of driver by considering his drive conditions and the real time diagnosis of driver color blindness and vehicle addictiveness to it is completely novel.

Conclusions

This proposed work shall trigger driver for an drive readiness recheck and also in tern provide safety for other road users. Moreover the captured driver reaction to the driving environment shall be stored in the vehicle for proving his innocence in the case of an accident.
