Abstract

Research and/or Engineering Questions/Objective

The driver, in trying to manage the backward of his vehicle, blind spots caused car accidents frequent. Therefore, in this paper, developed a new system of reversing lamp for the pedestrian and the car after vehicle can notice the driver’s intention. The goal of this study is developing a new reversing lamp system and verify it.

Methodology

In a backward situation, some pedestrians or car are difficult to notice the vehicle moving in reverse, because it is hidden in a both side of the car or wall. Also driver has poor visibility because the back area in the blind spots not directly observable through the rear view mirror. This system has formed a pattern such as dots. It is possible to recognize in a blind spot and sufficient distance. It composes the name “guide system”. The guide system is powered by electrically connecting to the reversing lamp power line and is operable to the vehicle’s gear ‘R(reverse)’. For validation a guide system, monitoring test on the field in case of indoor/outdoor. One of the case is turn on the reversing lamp with guide system and the other is turn on the normally reversing lamp only. When the car is reversing, pedestrians or car passed to the vehicle’s rear and counted time to stop or react.

Results

Guide system developed a signal that project on the road by 3 dot patterns of white color. It is located on the road in the vehicle’s rear. As a result of this validation, pedestrians or car that is approaching to the backside of the car was able to recognize in a more advance the driver’s reversing intention when it mounted guide system than normally reversing lamp. In addition, when turn on the reversing lamp with a guide system, the reaction of vehicles or pedestrians in blind spots was more quickly recognized and avoided.

Limitations of this study

It is a signal function to form a driver’s backward intention on the road in the vehicle’s rear, it is difficult to recognize a sign when it’s bright such as afternoon. It is valid in a dark environment, such as an indoor parking lot or evening. Further study is required to determine the signal indicating the backward intended intuitively.

What does the paper offer that is new in the field including in comparison to other work by the authors?

The reversing guide system for the development and validation of new technologies is the world’s first research. And it follows the regulations of ECE, NAS, DOM for reversing lamps.

Conclusions

When the vehicle backward, it can increase the person’s awareness of the backward situation through the reverse intent on the road indicated by the signal:guide system. Although it is considered to be able to improve a road traffic safety.
