Abstract

Research and/or Engineering Questions/Objective

The vehicle equipped CID (Center Information Display) which is available to communicate a driver various information recently has increased. The CID is usually equipped on a center fascia of instrument panel and the display is covered with glass to protect LCD having touch interface function. The CID is mostly located inside the test zone of ECE R21 - the regulation is for the occupant head injury protection during impact to interior parts and the secondary injury caused by sharp edge and scattering splinter. Therefore these should be considered in the CID development and it can save time and cost to develop using CAE in the early stage. The failure condition found by CAE enables to find countermeasures efficiently.

Methodology

LS-Dyna, common solver for crash analysis, was used in the study. More accurate FE model was built through the correlation with test results for the failure prediction of cover glass. Based on the CAE analysis results with the correlated FE model, the cause of failure and countermeasures was found. The final countermeasure was confirmed by the physical test.

Results

Based on the analysis of test and CAE results, the failure criterion of cover glass was set up in CAE. The failure is caused by the low stiffness of CID structure. The design of CID structure was improved to prevent failure, and confirmed no failure of cover glass in the physical test.

Limitations of this study

It is hard to measure the stress level of CID cover glass in the physical test. Therefore it is not possible to compare the stress level between test and CAE results directly. However the CAE results show reasonable figure and tendency of glass failure. The methodology seems suitable for the early stage of CID development.

What does the paper offer that is new in the field including in comparison to other work by the authors?

The new modeling methodology and failure criteria were set up for head impact to CID. Additionally, The improved structure of CID has been also developed. Conclusions The failure of CID cover glass can be predicted using CAE in the early stage of development. The cause of failure is the low stiffness of CID structure. The reasonable countermeasures were found and the CID was improved.
