Abstract

Research and/or Engineering Questions/Objective

Governments and civil society organizations in accordance to their national conditions develop the appropriate rules and regulations, in order to restrict manufacturers to produce safer cars, to protect occupant and pedestrian safety. Currently offset crash tests (40% override and 25% override) only the driver's side impacts the rigid or deformable barrier, rather than examine the passenger side impacts barrier situation. This has resulted in the design of the manufacturer does not concern passenger side, or weaken the structure in order to save costs.

Methodology

When a frontal collision accident occurs in reality, the driver turns the steering wheel hardly out of instinct, try to avoid frontal impact own side, the result is either hit the passenger side or oblique collision the driver side (similar small offset crash). So occupants are more dangerous than drivers in reality traffic accidents. In the paper taking a finite element model of vehicle, simulates driver side and passenger side impact deformable barrier respectively, comparing with the extent of the damage of the dummies.

Results

The vehicle was designed not symmetrically on the frontal structure generally. The crash performance of passenger-side structure is worse than driver side. The passenger side offset collision might cause more harm to occupants.

Limitations of this study

An important limitation of the current study is no test correlation, only simulation result and traffic accident picture.

What does the paper offer that is new in the field including in comparison to other work by the authors?

From a view of frontal traffic accident in reality, research occupant side offset crash is important, but there is almost no attention and analysis newly. The paper’s content is new.

Conclusions

The article contents indicate that passenger-side offset crash more serious, so the relevant government departments and civil society organizations should introduce policies to protect passenger safety better, to restrict vehicle manufacturers attention the structure design of passenger side from the design stage.
