Abstract
Research and/or Engineering Questions/Objective
Airbag inflate in the event of certain frontal collision to help protect the occupants from serious physical injury. Generally, airbag deployment depends on a number of factors including vehicle speed, angles of impact and the density and stiffness of the vehicle impact detected by the airbag control unit during a collision. The objective of this study was to verify the improved performance of air bag deployment utilizing the active safety sensor information.
Methodology
In order to verify the crash discrimination performance improvement, the crash discrimination algorithm utilizing Active Safety sensor was developed and prototype airbag control unit for vehicle verification crash test was made. The vehicle verification crash test mode was developed through analyzing the airbag non-deployment accidents. The efficiency of crash discrimination algorithm utilizing active safety sensor was validated through the airbag deployment performance in the vehicle crash test.
Results
The crash discriminator of airbag control unit with active safety sensor is able to estimate predictive collision target object for the field mode crash tests. The closing velocity of target object in forward looking active safety sensor is relatively accurate. This information can be utilized for improving the field crash detection performance of airbag control unit by using the active safety discriminator. Calibration strategy for non-active safety discriminators is also important because they should cover all crash events when the active safety system is in the fault condition.
Limitations of this study
This study verified the active safety sensor information utilization efficiency in the air bag deployment performance improvement perspective. Additional verification is required for active sensor information utilization efficiency in crash injury mitigation perspective.
What does the paper offer that is new in the field including in comparison to other work by the authors?
The forward-looking sensors such as radar and camera of active safety system used for autonomous precrash braking function. The interest of this study is the active safety sensor used by the airbag control unit for frontal crash discrimination performance improvement.
Conclusions
The active safety sensor information utilization efficiency in the air bag deployment performance improvement was verified through a field mode crash tests.
