Abstract

Engine covers such as timing cover and oil sump always radiate significant noise due to its low stiffness and big area contribution compared to other components. As one of the most important components of engine, covers with good structure provide possibility for excellent engine NVH performance. In this paper, one mass-produced engine is adopted and timing cover and oil sump are studied. The covers with different designs are evaluated and compared each other by means of simulation, and finally validated by prototype measurements on test cell. According to this method, some good design rules and structural concepts are got. With these designs and concepts, engines with low structure-borne noise could be achieved.
