Abstract

Subaru has developed the next generation new stereo camera with all performance improved relative to conventional stereo cameras. Today, we are the only manufacturer that achieved a commercialization of the Advanced Driver Assistance Systems using only stereo cameras in the world. However, we think the stereo camera needs to have longer detection range, wider angles, and higher accuracy. The hardware of the new stereo camera is renewed, such as higher performance imaging processor and higher performance CPU. In addition, the new object recognition algorithms are applied. This significantly improves the recognition performance of forward vehicle's rapid deceleration and achieves the detection performance of stationary objects to the higher level that is not achievable by other sensor systems. The measures realized higher safety performance than conventional stereo camera system in the Pre Crash Brake and Adaptive Cruise Control. If we want higher safety performance systems, we should recognize various surrounding traffic information and situations. The development showed in this paper suggests that the stereo camera largely contributes to future auto driving systems. This paper describes the function and construction of the Advanced Driver Assistance Systems using the next generation camera.
