Abstract
The main goal of this study was to assess the effectiveness of an external rollover protection system (ROPS) under rollover conditions, focusing on preserving the integrity of the occupants. Numerical simulations were performed using a non-linear FEM model of the Roofcrush experimental test based on the standard FMVSS 571.216 and a virtual model of a pickup truck equipped or not with this safety device. Models were developed by LS-Dyna a finite element program and the pickup was supposed to travel in mine environments. The performance requirements of the standard FMVSS 571.208 and specific literature are used to evaluate the occupants’ safety. The results demonstrate that the proposed safety device can provide an upgrade in safety for the vehicle occupants in rollover accidents.
