Abstract

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are developed to support the driver and by doing so, increase the comfort and safety of driving. Many are emerging on the market nowadays and current developments in the area of ADAS evolve to support the driver in more and more difficult situations such as crossings and encounters with Vulnerable Road Users (VRU). This is supported by new sensors and sensor processing algorithms. For both development and evaluation, tools are required to examine system functionality.

Starting point for this paper are the requirements for the technical evaluation of the VW collision mitigation system [5] for the EU-project InteractIVe [1]. The VW collision mitigation system is mainly targeted on car to car crossing scenarios. To test crossing scenarios for the assessment, a new test setup is developed by TNO which is presented in the paper.

The requirements of the test system encompassed some challenges, e.g. the setup should well represent the actual targets and the actual situations/scenarios and the setup should support repeated testing of a single scenario for debugging for development and comparison and rating for evaluation. Another challenge is the collision mitigation functionality of the ADA system requiring a test setup that can test the car system till the moment of impact (TTC=0). This requires to have a crashable object that must be able to move. The proof-of-concept of the system is used in the technical evaluation of the VW collision mitigation system for the EU-project InteractIVe.

In this paper, next to the design and setup itself, the findings of testing with the new test setup will be discussed mainly from the test setup perspective. The test scenarios are described and the most important results, concerning the setup, as retrieved from the tests during the EU-project interactIVe will be shown.
