Abstract

In order to prevent oncoming head-on accidents BMW has developed the enhanced Dynamic Path Predictor (eDPP) in the European research project interactIVe. The function tries to prevent head-on collisions in two ways. First, it informs the driver in situations, in which overtaking is not recommended in order to prevent inappropriate situations for overtaking. These situations typically occur when the needed overtaking path cannot be seen by the driver due to the infrastructure (e.g. curves, hills, intersections). Additionally situations are addressed, in which the driver has already started or at least is intending to overtake while there is an upcoming vehicle. In these situations the upcoming vehicle is detected by means of vehicle-2-vehicle (V2V) communication and the driver is warned. Evaluation of the eDPP has been conducted based on two tested situations.
