Abstract

Understanding and inferring driver intentions is an important issue for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) to improve safety and comfort. In this study, we first collected lane change data of Chinese skilled drivers driving on the real road. The data included driver control, drivers’ head and eye movements, and vehicle movements. Next, we divided data into three segments which were before, during, and after of lane change. Then, we deeply analyzed driver lane change behaviors by using these data. The results indicate several interesting and surprising properties of drivers’ lane change behaviors. These results will give a reliable foundation on which to develop a useful model of driver lance change behavior.
