Detection of Dysfunction of SATNAV-Based Automotive Systems by GPS - or Galileo-Jammers

Abstract

Automotive Systems, like Driver Assistant Systems and even safety-critical functions, are increasingly using the signals of global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) like GPS and upcoming Galileo. There is a huge benefit for car safety and it is an essential technology for cooperative driving. However, a major threat of GNSS is its vulnerability to signal interferences and jamming. Impacts range from reduced accuracy to a complete loss of the signal. To protect safety critical systems against malfunctions it is mandatory to have a robust system to detect jammers or any other destructive interferences.

First, various physical jammer devices have been analysed in functionality, operation modes and spectrum analysis. Afterwards the DETECTOR module has been developed to identify and classify these jammers. DETECTOR mainly targets a deployment in vehicles, at traffic infrastructures and on tolling gantries. Pre- and post-correlation techniques have been composed to achieve the detection algorithm. Jammer classification can be realized by frequency and spectrogram analysis; where details will be described in the paper accordingly. After the system integration work and excessive tests in the lab, real field tests and the validation phase have been conducted at the novel automotiveGATE, the test facility for any Galileo/GPS application in automotive. This paper shows the principles, the solution, the realisation and finally the proof of concept and validation of a jammer-detection methodology, already implemented inside an appropriate ECU-device as the result of an EUFP7 funded project. In addition jammer findings during a first roll-out are covered.

All testing done in the lab and in the wide area of automotiveGATE have shown that in all cases the DETECTOR solution was able to detect, identify and classify all various jammers used. Just recently DETECTOR devices have been attached to a gantry on the highway in France detecting jammers being used already today.

DETECTOR can operate as a standalone system as well as it can safeguard larger areas or infrastructures as a networked compound. The role of DETECTOR is to detect a jamming attack, characterize it and to be a means for the authorities to take legal action against the responsible persons. Early hardware, initial service and a concept for implementation are already available as of today.
