Frontal Crash Protection Results Considering the Full Frontal and Offset Frontal Crash in KNAP

Abstract

The Korean New Car Assessment Program (KNCAP) has conducted the full frontal crash test since 1999. The full frontal crash test procedure is the approach based on the US-NCAP. The full frontal crash test method has contributed to the enhancement of the occupant protection performance of the domestic vehicles. To reduce the social cost by the injuries of the lower extremities, the offset frontal crash test based on the EuroNCAP was added and conducted in the KNCAP in 2009. The star rating system by the combined injury risk calculated using the Head Injury Criterion (HIC) and the chest g’s is used for the full frontal crash test. The star rating system by the points calculated using the injury criteria of the body parts is used for the offset frontal crash test. The KNCAP evaluated the occupant protection performance of ten vehicles from four domestic and two foreign auto makers. Nine vehicles got five stars under the full frontal crash test. Ten vehicles except the driver position of one vehicle got five stars under the offset frontal crash test. The effect of the chest g’s was dominant for the full frontal crash test. The injuries of the lower extremities were the dominant factor for the offset frontal crash test.
