Abstract
The goal of driver assistance systems released in recent years has been to increase traffic safety. Demonstrating the effectiveness of such systems is one of the main challenges today due to the small number of vehicles equipped with these systems. This paper presents a method to explore the benefit of the Predictive Emergency Braking System (PEBS) using a dynamic driving simulator. 42 test persons separated into two equally sized groups were confronted with a sudden event. One group was driving with driver assistance, the other one without support. A statistical analysis of the collision rate and collision velocity of both groups showed that the number of collisions was significantly reduced by the PEBS function. In addition, in case of a crash the collision velocity was significantly decreased.
