Abstract

In the automotive manufacturing, crash worthiness has been considered as a first priority before entering the stage of structure design. Due to safety reason, there are few design standards to be followed by automotive manufacturer and therefore all safety aspect should be clearly defined. In order to ensure the vehicle are fitted with safety design and devices, few mechanical testing take in place and most popular mechanical testing is crash test. The main objective of this paper is to investigate frontal impact during collisions on multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) as NGV (Natural Gas Vehicle) and MPV without NGV through simulation by Finite Element Analysis. In this simulation, both vehicle models were tested to crash the static barrier from the front side with assumption of full-width crash at speeds 80 kilometer per hour and a distance of 2.5 m between the MPV and the static barrier. The results show the comparison on a damaged structure and energy absorbed between the MPV that were applied with NGV and MPV without the NGV system when the collision occurred. Static barrier, MPV frame structure and finite element model has been designed and simulated by ABAQUS software. The highest deformation was obtained when the MPV with NGV collide with the static crash barrier compared to MPV without NGV. Thus, it shows the vehicle applied with NGV system will produce a big momentum due to the increasing of vehicle’s weight and give a big impact on structure damaging compare to the vehicle without applying the NGV system during collision.
