Abstract

This work examined the flow field inside the intake system of a high performance production motorcycle engine. To this purpose a numerical and an experimental analysis was carried out. Specifically, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) technique was used to calculate the flow field within the intake system while pressure and mass flow rate measurements were taken on a steady-flow rig. Furthermore, Laser Doppler Anemometry (LDA) measurements were acquired within the combustion chamber. Computations were performed at several valve lifts to evaluate the capability of the k-w RANS model in the prediction of very complex incylinder flow fields. At the same time, different grid topologies were used to investigate the influence of the domain discretization on the accuracy of the numerical solution for industrial applications. The comparison between experimental and numerical results was performed, and the resulting outcomes showed a good agreement both in terms of global and local quantities.
