Simulation Process Development of Radiation Noise and Application on the Exhaust Muffler

Abstract

Muffler radiation noise is an important noise source that influences vehicle internal NVH performance. In this study, we’re aiming to investigate the effect of each components of muffler such as outer case, end-plate and baffle of muffler on the radiation noise by using numerical simulation which includes several commercial softwares – such as Fluent, Nastran and Sysnoise by linking together with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to perform structural simulation and radiated noise simulation. In order to link flow-solver with structural solver, the code for data transformation in-between was systematically programmed and employed. As a result, various radiation noise level was observed depending on design parameters of muffler and we could identify the effect of each component of muffler such as outer thickness, length of inner pipe, and location of inner baffle on the radiation noise.
